The Government of Saskatchewan, a province in Canada, has announced that the construction of the new Weyburn General Hospital (WGH) is progressing as planned, with approximately 30% of the project now complete.

This work completion milestone marks a significant step in the construction timeline of the hospital.

The construction work on the WGH commenced in June last year.

Currently, the superstructure and shell of the WGH facility are taking shape, encompassing the exterior walls, windows, roofs, as well as the initial stages of interior floors, along with mechanical and electrical rough-ins.

WGH is on track to enhance healthcare services in the province’s Weyburn region with a scheduled completion date of December next year.

Upon completion, the 35-bed healthcare facility will significantly improve and expand medical services for the Weyburn community.

The hospital is designed to include 25 acute care beds and ten inpatient beds for mental health services along with other services such as ambulatory care, emergency medical services, and allied health.

In addition, the new WGH will feature a heliport, which will enhance patient transport efficiency and safety.

The facility will also have space for social work services and the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation office, consolidating various health services under one roof for patient convenience.

Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) chief operating officer Derek Miller said: “With the structure of the hospital taking shape, the SHA is actively planning for the care our teams will provide patients.

“The new Weyburn General Hospital represents a significant upgrade to health services provided to residents of Weyburn and the surrounding region, not only in terms of technology, but also to the innovations in patient care that will lead to improved patient outcomes.”

The new hospital is being constructed as part of the Government of Saskatchewan’s more than C$120m ($87.6m) commitment to support the WGH project.

The community, along with the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation, is also contributing an additional C$38.4m to cover a portion of the capital costs, which mainly includes fixtures, furniture, and equipment.

In November 2022, Saskatoon’s Wright Construction Western was selected for carrying out the design and build work related to the new WGH facility.
